Mural.Dudley-Anne Hill is the Martinborough business powerhouse behind the Neighbourhood Cafe and Karahui Bar & Eatery. She's also a regular collector of my work, so when she asked me to paint a mural on what is now Karahui's Tasting Room building, I jumped at the chance. Dudley-Anne trusts people to do cool stuff - it's really exciting to be given such free rein!
I asked my friend Ellen Rodda, my Wairarapa poet-gardener-flower-grower, if she'd choose a couple of minimalist poems from her book "Shortly We Will Be In Good Health" to go on the wings. She was keen to have her words on a wall and picked two meaningful single-sentence poems. I love her minimalist style very much. Dudley-Anne's only brief was that wanted some black and white wings that people could pose in front of when they visit Martinborough. Me: Can I make them weird? Duds: Hell yes. #weirdowingswww.instagram.com/explore/tags/weirdowings/ |
Process pics. Here's a slideshow of the mural process (some photos by me, and the great ones by Lucy Cooper Photography).
The design is packed full of native plants, weird people, honeycomb, native birds and fish, and masks of all kinds. |
